Kickapoo Rail Trail

Trails of the Grand Prairie remains committed to our ongoing advocacy and support of the Kickapoo Rail Trail.  When completed, the Kickapoo Rail Trail will be a 24.5 mile recreational trail with segments in Champaign and Vermilion Counties in East Central Illinois, linking the Kickapoo State Recreation Area to Urbana, and potentially beyond.

Kickapoo Rail Trail Future Extension to Danville? We hope so!

In 2024 the City of Danville hired the Lochmueller group to help determine the best route to extend the Kickapoo Rail Trail from the Vermillion County Fairgrounds into the city.

The study evaluated factors such as property ownership, destinations, ADA accessibility, surrounding land use, user safety, and connectivity to trail networks. A steering committee was formed at the beginning of the project which includes representatives from cities, villages, and townships along the rail corridor, the Vermillion County Conservation District, the Illinois Department of Transportation, local nonprofits (like us!) and bicycling and pedestrian advocates.

While efforts are still in the preliminary planning stages we’re excited to be one of the many organizations committed to helping move this project forward.
